Abstract
Free trade is seen as the most successful way of political and economic development of Western countries, and Kosovo, as a state, with the same objective aims for membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO). This research paper points out the challenges of WTO membership, taking into consideration the benefits and costs. In this research, books and publications of the relevant authors and official reports of the WTO are used, and through a comparative method, Macedonia’s challenges after joining the WTO are reviewed, as an example of a small state WTO member. From the disclosure of results from interviews conducted with competent persons from Kosovo, we identified the costs and benefits of membership in the WTO. Beneficiaries of membership are categorized into three levels: the state, companies and consumers. Generally, costs are related to legislative changes in the field of trade and harmonization of trade policies with those of the WTO.

Abstrakt
Tregtia e lirë shihet si forma më e suksesshme e zhvillimit ekonomik dhe politik të shteteve perëndimore dhe poashtu edhe Kosova si një shtet me po të njëjtin objektiv synon anëtarsimin në Organizatën Botërore të Tregtisë (OBT). Ky punim hulumtues nxjerr në pah sfidat nga anëtarësimi në OBT, duke marrur parasysh përfitimet dhe kostot. Në hulumtim janë përdorur libra dhe publikime të autorëve përkatës si dhe raportet zyrtare të OBT-së, kurse nëpërmjet metodës krahasuese shqyrtohen sfidat e Maqedonisë pas anëtarësimit në OBT, si një shembull i një shteti të vogël anëtar në OBT. Nga shpalosja e rezultateve nga intervistat e realizuara me persona kompetent nga Kosova, vimë në konkludim se cilat janë kostot dhe përfitimet nga anëtarësimi në këtë organizatë. Përfitimet nga anëtarësimi në OBT kategorizohen në tre nivele dhe atë: shteti, kompanitë dhe konsumatorët. Kostot në përgjithësi kanë të bëjnë me ndryshimet legjislative nga fusha e tregtisë dhe harmonizimi i politikave tregtare me ato të OBT-së.
